About

Cerys Leahy is a documentary photographer. Her work centres around the banal and the observation of her surroundings. Growing up in a small fenland village, she found herself embracing the mundane - something that is reflected within her personal projects. Cerys is particularly interested in the concept of Britishness, and being ordinary. When asked about her work, she often bluntly summarises it as “it is what it is”.

Within her work, subjects are portrayed realistically without any romanticism or cynicism; the banal is taken and displayed rather than altered to fit an aesthetic. Influenced by Stephen Shore, the edges of an image are key, adding definition and providing a place in time. There is often no notable locations included within her work, each shot could be something you pass on your daily commute or have visited once before. This is apparent within her current project, exploring the symbiotic relationship between humans and their environment, in which she practises psychogeography and derive walks to further her work.

Cerys has recently had two images published in the Docu Magazine e-book: Docu Book Vol 17 – Best of Documentary & Street Photography.
